SMALL BUSINESS CEO FEATURE
The Hidden Cost of Cheating
Larry Elkin
The Cajuns who settled Louisiana's bayous have a distinct culture that goes beyond French words and spicy food. Forced long ago from their Canadian homes, separated by language and religion from the society that grew around them, the Cajuns, for the most part, wanted government to leave them alone.

Like a lot of other Americans who think of government as "them" rather than "us," they saw little shame in working off the books. The fishermen who plied the Gulf and the inland waterways built an industry based on tradition, handshakes and a great deal of cash.

Overly Demanding Donors - Some Sage Advice
Lorri Greif
It's a thin line that development professionals walk when establishing comfortable limits in interactions with donors and prospects - even as we try to get them to tell us everything and anything about themselves. We know that learning more about donors and prospects adds to our ability as development professionals - the more we know, the easier it is to help donors make gifts that work for them as well as our charity. But be sure you are comfortable as a relationship progresses.

Naturally, as part of the cultivation and stewardship process, we try to be informative, considerate, patient, friendly and helpful. After all, our donors are also our ambassadors and making them happy about our charity and staff is all part of the development process.

Truth in Marketing? Or Not!
Brian Lawley
Two of the most basic tenets in Marketing are that: 1.) you should never insult your potential customers and 2.) your marketing must be congruent (i.e. you can stretch the truth a bit but you can't cross the line to where it is too far from reality). For this article I'm going to use a well-known (and well-liked) company to illustrate why these are both so important.

Years ago when I was working at Apple as the MacOS Human Interface Product Manager I remember talking with Chris Espinosa, one of the first Apple employees (and still there). We were discussing Apple's latest advertising campaign at the time in which it blatantly put down PC users, telling them they had made "the wrong choice".

Annetta Powell
As the competition in online businesses is becoming deadly, every internet marketer now aims at developing his solid clientele. Although there are many ways to develop a solid following, there is one marketing technique that is not only very effective but also very powerful, and this is what all online businesses are aspiring: a powerful opt-in list of people who agreed to receive e-mail updates from you.
